What Makes it a Cruiser?
A cruiser will always have a few traits that showcase their heritage. Originally, these bikes were designed to treat their riders to relaxing rides along a beach. This makes them very different from other kinds of comfort bikes!
- Cantilever Frame – the defining feature of these frames are the seat stays. These will curve downward to connect to the down tube. Often times, the only straight tubes on the bike will be the seat tube and the head tube.
- Simple Features- you won’t find complex shifters, suspension forks or even brakes on these bikes. Everything is kept simple, for a minimalist look and ride.
- Upright Riding – the seat and handlebars are set up so that you are riding in a completely upright position.
- Extra Wide Tires – cruisers typically have tires that are two or more inches wide. These big tires are kept somewhat soft, for plenty of cushion.
- The Coaster Brake – many cruisers just use coaster brakes. To stop, you simply back pedal. It’s like being a kid again!
How Many Gears Does It Have?
Cruisers generally only have a few gears. Most are single speeds, which is perfect for shorter rides or flat areas. Those of us who might want to ride over 20 miles at a time, face a few hills or go faster than 20 MPH might want a three or five speed. Seven speed bikes are great for hilly areas or ambitious riders ready to ride to the next town.
Most three or five speed cruisers will have intra-gear hubs, or IGH. This means that all the gearing is tucked away inside the hub. This also means these hubs don’t require much maintenance. This technology is extremely reliable, having been used for well over a hundred years. Shifting is smooth, simple and can be done while you are stopped.
Derailleur system bikes are more common today than IGH bikes, at least in the USA. They let you have more gears. Those gears are all external.
You’ll need to regularly clean the gear cogs and the derailleur itself. They are also a little fussier to adjust. Higher upkeep and adjustment requirements have kept derailleurs off most beach cruisers.
This bike comes with a choice of one, three or seven gears. The one and three speed bikes are sold in all sizes but the seven speed option is only sold in the larger size.
This bike just has a single speed, but other versions of this bike come in three and seven speeds. It’s good for those of us riding between three and fifteen miles per hour in sun, rain or even a little snow.
The EVRYjourney has a derailleur shifting system with seven speeds. It’s great if your home is hilly. It will need a little more maintenance though.
This bike comes in single speed, a three speed and a seven speed. The three speed is an IGH, the seven speed has a derailleur shifter.
The In the Barrel cruiser is sold as a one speed, a three speed and a seven speed. The seven speed is a derailleur bike.
Braking Systems Briefly Explained
You won’t find state of the art disk brakes on a cruiser. What you will find is technology that has stood the test of time. Most cruisers will simply have a single back brake or coaster brake. Coasters provide ease of use without cluttering up the frame with cables.
Coaster brakes work by locking up the rear wheel hub. The hub is braced against the frame for safety. They are nearly maintenance free. I’ve never needed to even take mine to the shop! Coaster brakes are great if you ride in wet or sandy conditions like you’d find at the beach.
Both the one speed and the three speed use rear coaster brakes. The seven speed has front and rear handbrakes.
This model comes with a coaster brake on the one and three speeds. The hub is a KT Coaster hub.
This bike has both front and rear pull brakes. The brakes are a modern mountain biking style, so you know they have good stopping power.
The single and three speed bikes use coaster brakes. The seven speed uses front and rear pull brakes. Those are a reliable mountain style.
The In the Barrel has coaster hubs on the one and three speed bikes. The seven speed has front and rear handbrakes. Interestingly, all components on this bike are black, even the brakes.
Which Size for Me?
Cruisers use both 24 and 26 inch wheels. The 24 inch wheels with smaller frames are considered the right size for those of us between four feet and five feet tall. If you are between five feet and six feet tall, you will prefer 26 inch wheels for your bike.
The Urban Lady comes in both 24 and 26 inch frames.
The single speed model is a 17 inch frame with 26 inch wheels.
The bike has 26 inch wheels and will fit riders between five and six feet tall.
This frame is a 19 inches, with 26 inch wheels. It will fit men from five feet four inches to six feet two inches.
This bike has 26 inch wheels and an extended 18 inch frame. They will fit a rider who is five feet four inches to six feet four inches.
Colors and Color Combinations
From creamy whites, baby blues and dreamy yellow to rich reds, deep blacks and vibrant greens, a cruiser has always had a great paint job. Because many cruisers use coaster brakes, they can feature quirky painted wheel rims to compliant the frame’s color.
Little details such as pinstripes or even intricate painted scenes are often applied to the frame or fenders. Some bikes will even have matching stitching on the saddle!
The Urban Lady has a choice of 17 color combinations to choice from. These include girly frames with pink wheels, timeless creamy colors reminiscent of the 1950s and eye-grabbing reds and oranges.

These guys are one of the brands that match the saddles to the frames. They are a nice brown with frame matching stitch-work along the rear and sides. Even better, the handlebar grips match too!
This bike only comes in three colors. They are a golden-yellow called cream with tan rims, a dark navy blue frame and sky-blue rims and a lovely bright teal frame with chrome rims.
The best cruiser bikes will always come in a rainbow of colors. The Urban Man comes in 13 colors. These include matte shades, eye-catching reds and oranges and even a shiny chrome! Rims are all chrome aluminum.
The In the Barrel bike comes in many colors. But not every speed has the same paint colors available. The single speed is sold in matte gray and black, a shiny orange shade and a neon blue. The three and seven speeds are only sold in matte black.
About that black bike. I love it. The whole bike is black. The rims, the tires, the spokes and cables are all black. The saddle and handlebars and grips are also black. If it had any buttons, they’d be black too. This bike is a real ninja rider!
Look at that Frame!
Any bike can have coaster brakes, fat tires and just one gear. It takes a special kind of frame to make it a cruiser. These bikes have that special something.
The Firmstrong Urban Lady has a step-though steel cantilever frame. This means that the seat stays, while curved, do not make a complete arc to the down tube. The top tube is somewhat lower in the rear too.
The saddle is a wide, well-sprung cruiser model. The handlebars are wide and rounded. This bike doesn’t come with fenders. It weighs around 38 pounds.
The Beach Cruiser is another steel step-through cantilever frame. The bike does have wide, full fenders on both wheels. There is also a protective chain case in case you’d like to wear a dress.
The bike weighs around 38 pounds. It fits a rider up to six feet two inches. The frame is crank-forward, meaning it is forgiving to those of us with lower back issues. The bubble saddle is a comfy synthetic stitched leather with matching stitched grips.
Technically, this bike is more of a hybrid, not a true cruiser. But it’s still a comfort bike and one of the best cruiser bikes. It has an aluminum low step through frame with a flat-footed crank-forward design. That means you’ll always be able to put your feet down while staying in the saddle.
The bike weighs around 35 pounds. It comes with a rear rack, fenders and has bottle mounts on the down tube. It has a little more utility than most other beach cruisers. It can fit a rider who is under six feet five inches tall.

The In The Barrel frame is not a typical frame, it is an extended steel frame. This means that the saddle and seat post are set further back on the frame. The peddles are set further forward to make the ride more comfortable. You ride this bike as if you were sitting in your favorite easy chair.
I’ve already mentioned that these bikes are blacked out. The bubble saddle is cushy synthetic leather and the grips have matching stitching. This bike has no fenders. It does has a frame matching chain guard to protect your pants as you ride.
Who better to ask about a bike then someone who has owned and ridden it for a while? I’ve read the cruiser bike reviews so you don’t have to.
This bike has over 500 reviews but still has five stars. Nearly every owner loves this bike. While the step-through on this frame isn’t as low as some others, it is still pretty easy to hop on, even if you can’t throw a leg over the rear wheel. The steel frame and squashy tires give a Cadillac ride, one that many owners love.
Another well-reviewed bike, this model has nearly five stars. One of the big positives of this bike is the stability it offers. One reviewer was 74 and just learning to ride her first bike. She just loved the stability that this design offers. People love the colors. People also love dealing with this company’s excellent customer service. Many believe that sixthreezero is a maker of some of the best beach cruiser bikes today.

If you are more frail than most, or are recovering from a surgery, then this might be a good bike for you. It’s very stable, even if your balance isn’t perfect.

One thing I will mention is that this model is popular with larger riders. People as heavy as 300 pounds report riding their Urban Man bikes without incident. Other riders even mod these bikes with aftermarket engine kits! They truly are tough bikes!
Many cruiser bike reviews mention relaxation as the reason for riding a cruiser. The In the Barrel is no exception. The very relaxed frame is perfect for riding with kids. And unlike either a road bike or a mountain bike, a cruiser bike doesn’t pressure it’s rider to ride harder or faster and further. People enjoy just riding these bikes, for riding’s own pleasure.
The flat-footed extended design has two other bonuses. People report that it climbs hills far easier than normal frames. The long top tube of this frame is a good fit for those of us with a longer than typical torso.
Best of the Best
- Customer Care
Since this review has both men’s and women’s frames I really can’t pick just a single bike. I found that the sixthreezero cruisers are the best for our money. In particular, I chose the men’s In the Barrel cruiser and the women’s Beach Cruiser. Let me explain each choice.
The Women’s Beach Cruiser
This is just a lovely bike. I consider this bike to be one of my personal favorites in my stable. A beach cruiser isn’t just a comfort bike, it is supposed to have a lot of style. This is a bike that will always get a compliment. This is a bike that just makes people smile to see it.
The lightweight aluminum wheels are painted. This give the bike a very unique look. Most stock saddles are worth replacing. Not this one. It’s really comfortable. It also looks great on the bike.
This is also a bike that will make you smile when you examine it. It’s very well put together. The paint is glossy and perfect. The welding is so neatly done it’s nearly invisible. The Shimano components are quality, made to last.
The Women’s Beach Cruiser
We have customer care to consider next. This company has a great track record when it comes to fixing any problems with their bikes. In this day and age, it is great to see a brand that has the full support of the company that owns it.
Lastly, we have durability. The sixthreezero cruisers aren’t fussy. They are made using durable parts that have well-tested technology. They are safe for larger riders. A cruiser should just work, even years after you buy it. These bikes do just that.
The Men’s In The Barrel Cruiser
I liked this bike for all of the same reasons that I liked the women’s sixthreezero cruiser. It has a charm and look that is just timeless. Its extremely comfortable to ride. It’s built to last. Larger people can enjoy these bikes.
While the In the Barrel doesn’t have nifty coordinated painted rims, it does have that sleek blackout paint job instead. It is really sharp on that extended frame. It’s a real head turner.
The Men’s In The Barrel Cruiser
If you are looking for a great bike to bop around town with or a ride with the family bike, then either of these two bikes will fit the bill. If you want a bike that looks far pricier than it is or just one to keep at the shore, well, sixthreezero also has you covered.
