Searching for the Best Mountain Bike Helmet 2017

A good helmet is all that is between your head and a rock. That’s something I heard often when I first started riding seriously. These five helmets are reasonably priced with great features. Each one has plenty to offer us. Many riders have left glowing mountain bike helmets reviews for these products, too. Let’s take a look for ourselves.

Best Mountian Bike Helmet

I will be looking at the following criteria:

  • Safety. Is the helmet safe or certified? Safe construction is paramount. Having a certified safe helmet is very reassuring.
  • Construction. Is it built to last? Helmets are supposed to last a few years or one hard crash. We want the ones we won’t have to replace yearly.
  • Comfort. Can I wear it all day? Sometimes I just want to ride all day. A heavy or uncomfortable helmet might tempt me to take it off. That’s just not a good thing!
  • Design. Do I look like a dork? While not that high up in importance, looking great is nothing to sneeze at.
  • Adjustable Features. Can I adjust it quickly? The best mountain bike helmets are easy to adjust on the fly.

The Best Mountian Bike Helmets 2017 Review

#1 GoMax Aero Adult Safety Helmet Adjustable

Safety is Important!

This lightweight and aero-style helmet features a single in-mold polycarbonate shell. The dark gray EPS layer is made of high density foam. This particular type of EPS foam provides more protection in the event of a crash. It even has a removable chin protection strap for those more adventurous rides.

Materials and Overall Design

This is a good looking helmet. Unlike many mountain biking helmets, this one will look at home nearly everywhere. It features a swept back style popular with speedy road riders. The Aero comes in white, green, orange, blue and black. The orange and green colors are high visibility shades. There is reflective detailing on the back and it is easy to attach small lights.

Ride in Comfort

The GoMax Aero has moisture wicking pads between your head and that non-breathable foam. It will keep you far more comfortable. The helmet sits well above the occipital bone. If you like to ride in the bright sun, then you will also appreciate the handy removable sun visor.

Adjusting for the Perfect Fit

This design has fully adjustable nylon web strapping. The adjustment knob is located at the back of the helmet. I found it very easy to use; it is similar to many higher end designs. The adjustment system is very forgiving. You’ll be able to get a perfect fit.

Weight and Long Term Wear

This helmet is designed to be light-weight. Most riders find that they forget they have it on after even a short ride.

Ventilation and Air Flow

This helmet is made for the active rider. We active riders can overheat in the summertime, so vented helmets are necessary. I liked the ventilation on this model. This helmet has 22 well-designed air vents. Your head will stay cool as you ride.

What do Other Users Say?

Purchasers of this helmet loved the bright colors, adjustable features and high quality of this budget helmet. It nearly has a five-star rating! People who had 100 dollar helmets believe this helmet to be comparable to those high-end goods.

#2 Fox Flux MTB Helmet

Safety is Important!

A real mountain biking helmet provides good back of the head coverage. This helmet has full skull coverage in the back, giving us that extra bit of protection. You won’t find a similar style with more coverage for non-professional wear.

Materials and Overall Design

The Flux is made of a high density foam with a seamless polycarbonate shell. It has aero styling in the sides and rear. The color schemes are nicely modern. It comes in a solid black, tech print red and black, striped hot pink and white, splattered green, pink and black, flame print gray and orange, and ice blue with red.

Ride in Comfort

Users say that this helmet is extremely comfortable, many forget they even have it on. It has removable padding that absorbs sweat while keeping you comfortable. Fox gives us extra padding to help make the fit as custom as possible. It has a sleek removable visor to keep the sun out of your eyes.

Adjusting for the Perfect Fit

I really liked this adjustment system. It features a very easy to use rear adjustment system. They call it Rear Detox Ratcheting. Basically, it is a cinch system instead of a typical dial. It means that I could quickly tighten it up before a downhill run or loosen it up a little for a more sedate ride with just one hand.

Weight and Long Term Wear

The Flux weighs less than a pound. That’s pretty impressive for a helmet that offers more coverage than most other cycle-cross helmets.

Ventilation and Air Flow

This is a summer heat friendly design. It has 20 ventilation ports along the top, sides and back. The ventilation is stylishly worked into the design for a sporty look.

What do Other Users Say?

People loved the full coverage of this helmet. It’s far safer for mountain biking than designs with less coverage. One reviewer said that this helmet saved his life. He went head first at 25 miles an hour through a windshield and walked away. Others simply liked it because it doesn’t look dorky.

#3 TeamObsidian Premium Quality Airflow Bike Helmet

Safety is Important!

This is a great blend of a road helmet and a mountain biking helmet. It has a solid EPS safety layer and uses the safer ‘in-mold’ technology for construction. It has CE certification too. The strap design allows you to really customize the adjustments for the most secure fit, too.

Materials and Overall Design

As an American product, the Obsidian features tight quality control. They use a thick layer of EPS melted into a sturdy plastic outer shell for a safe design. It is sold in a nice matte black and a good-looking matte white.

via Amazon.com

Ride in Comfort

It has a nice aero look with an oval shape for comfort. There are comfortable pads along the cheek straps and throughout the helmet. These are removable and washable, something I was glad to see. There are 22 ventilation ports for maximum air flow. The company even offers a money back perfect fit guarantee.

Adjusting for the Perfect Fit

The company offers two sizes. That said, they have a very sophisticated fitting system that will quickly and easily shape the helmet to your head for comfortable protection. It has a typical dial style rear adjustment device that I found easy to loosen and tighten as needed.

Weight and Long Term Wear

Like most casual helmets, this one is fairly lightweight. You won’t have any trouble keeping it on for all day rides.

Ventilation and Air Flow

I have to say that the Obsidian was the coolest feeling helmet. They put a lot of thought into the layout of the 22 vents. The manufacturer claims that these vents do the work of 30. I believe them. The air really does flow over your head, almost as if you had no helmet on!

What do Other Users Say?

The Obsidian has a 4.9 out of five star average. Riders really like this helmet! One reviewer, who had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, chose this helmet for its high impact rating and reasonable price. People also loved the customer service offered by this small family run company.

#4 Giro Hex Mountain Bike Helmet

Safety is Important!

The Hex helmet features a built-in visor, an in-mold polycarbonate shell and high-density EPS foam layer. The rear of the helmet comes down fairly low, too, for more protection of the back of the head. The dial adjustment system is easy to adjust while riding for on the go safety changes. The fit of this helmet is quite close, making it a good choice for more aggressive riders.

Materials and Overall Design

The Hex is a close-fitting example of a classic cycle-cross helmet design. The design features are rugged; meant to stand up to the general rough housing that a serious mountain biker might encounter on a regular ride. The EPS layer is nice and thick, the shell is made of durable materials. It’s sold in matte white, a gray print and a somewhat shiny red.

Ride in Comfort

This is a helmet you will either love or hate. It is designed to fit closely to your skull. That snug fit is extremely comfortable for most people. Those of us with heads that are slightly different shaped will not be as comfortable though. The 21 vents and adjustable visor will funnel cool air over your skin quite nicely.

Adjusting for the Perfect Fit

I love this fit system. They call it the Roc Loc 5. It lets you dial in your perfect fit with micro-adjustments to the vertical position and harness tension. Even better, you can do this with the helmet on your head, with one hand! The straps are woven though the harness, keeping the position correct and you more comfortable.

Weight and Long Term Wear

The Hex’s Roc Loc 5 system is 40 percent lighter than the Roc Loc 4 system. It’s one of the heaviest helmets at a little over a pound. It is still comfortable for long wear on the trails; the fit system makes it feel lighter.

Ventilation and Air Flow

This helmet has 21 vents that are designed to work in tandem with the visor. You end up with a little bit of a wind tunnel effect, even if you aren’t exactly in a hurry. It’s not the most attractive design, but the result is a comfortable helmet.

What do Other Users Say?

Overall, people love this helmet. It is a great dedicated mountain biking helmet. Users recommend actually measuring your head for the best fit as it is a very close-fitting design. People liked being able to adjust the fit easily. A few others mentioned issues with sellers sending them older stock instead of new products.

#5 Giro Feature Mountain Bike Helmet

Safety is Important!

The Feature helmet is a serious trail rider’s dream. It is built to give your head the most possible protection from fall, pointy branches and other trail riding dangers. It is designed to be worn on even the craziest downhill trail, not for riding on paved streets. The rear cradles the back of your skull very nicely.

Materials and Overall Design

This helmet doesn’t look much like a road helmet. It’s not for that kind of ride! The outer plastic shell is thick, the inner foam is durable. This design has even more coverage than typical trail helmets. I had a hard time picking a favorite color. It comes in several shades of gray and black. There are a few funky color combinations like yellow striped red or bright robins egg blue to choose from.

Giro Feature Mountain Bike Helmet

via Amazon.com

Ride in Comfort

Like the Giro Hex, the Giro Feature is a close-fitting style of helmet. Giro uses the In-Form Fit system on this model. It allows quick and easy adjustments while riding. The interior has full padding to keep you comfortable. There is a high pony tail hair port at the back, handy for my long hair. The sun visor is attached, but you can easily tilt it or even push it out of the way.

Adjusting for the Perfect Fit

This system is sturdy, yet comfortable. The helmet is designed to be close-fitting so that your head is safe. Be sure to carefully measure your head before you buy. The adjustment system in this helmet is not able to accommodate a great range of sizing. What it does do is deliver a perfect fit for hard trail riding.

Weight and Long Term Wear

Like most of the best mountain bike helmets, the Feature is a little heavier. If you are used to road helmets, you might be a little uncomfortable at first. But trust me, the extra weight is worthwhile! It’s not so heavy as to be uncomfortable while riding.

Ventilation and Air Flow

This helmet uses its visor and channels in the EPS foam to keep your head cool. Like many other professional quality helmets, it doesn’t have a lot of vents. It only has 12. Those vents are carefully placed to shunt body heat out while traveling at low speeds. It might be a little warmer than a fully vented road helmet, but not much.

What do Other Users Say?

Most users of this helmet bought it because they wanted a full coverage mountain biking helmet. Many users bought this instead of a full face helmet for more serious trail riding or freestyle cycling. Users like the low, fitted profile and modern color choices. Wearers feel like they are taken seriously as mountain bikers while wearing this style of helmet.

The Best of the Best

These are all very popular helmets with many happy users. All of the mountain bike helmets had reviews that were very positive. Figuring out which one is the best is quite difficult. Let’s look at some variables.

  • How will I use it? If I’m planning on casual mountain biking I will want something different from what I’d need on a serious trail.
  • Do I want a dedicated trail helmet or something all-purpose? I like having a helmet for every purpose, but I know not everyone likes to do that.
  • What kind of protections do I need? We all have different levels of what kind of risk we are willing to take.

After much thought and reading many other mountain bike helmet reviews, I finally settled on the Giro Hex helmet. I feel that this helmet is the best blend of features at a great price. It is close-fitting, provides great protection and looks good while doing so. It makes for a great dedicated mountain bike helmet.

Giro Hex Mountain Bike Helmet

This helmet is the best blend of features at a great price. It is close-fitting, provides great protection and looks good while doing so. It makes for a great dedicated mountain bike helmet.

It is also happily at home on the heads of those of us who like to do more than just mountain bike. It won’t be out-of-place if you are out riding in the park with your kids, for example. This versatility is a bonus for another reason.

New mountain bikers sometimes underestimate themselves and settle for gear that can’t grow with them. This helmet is not going to do that. The Giro Hex is a great first helmet that won’t let you down when you decide to try out those challenging trails for the first time. It’s also great for more experienced riders who want great protection on a hot day.

For these reasons, I have to say that the Hex is indeed the best of the best.
